Eedo ForceTen reduced travel costs and the duration of Instructor-led courses while improving the consistency of messaging.

Company
DEUTSCHE LUFTHANSA AG ranks at the top among the world’s leading airlines. As an Aviation Group, Lufthansa adheres firmly to economic and strategic criteria, focusing on the core competencies of its six business areas: passenger traffic, logistics, Maintenance Repair and Overhaul, catering, leisure travel, and IT services. The Group attaches overriding importance to quality and innovation, safety and reliability.

Problem
Like many commercial aviation companies, Lufthansa has been among the pioneers of using technologybased solutions for training and development of their highly skilled personnel. In the past, this meant relying heavily on the customized development of e-learning materials by third party agencies commissioned independently by Lufthansa’s 23 business units.

With the current intense competition and cost cutting pressures that challenge everyone in the aviation industry, Lufthansa has embarked on streamlining this process by systematically using internal resources such as Trainers and Subject Matter Experts for the development of online learning Content. Over and above this, further cost cutting effects were sought through introducing a level playing field for all internal and external developers allowing the systematic reuse of materials and assets across the entire enterprise. This challenge required a highly flexible Learning Content Management System, capable of delivering the advanced authoring capability required for highly complex aviation subjects as well as providing a low complexity template-driven mechanism for interactive learning content creation by subject matter experts without specific programming or media design expertise. As if this was not challenging enough, the solution also had to be scalable across an organization structured in largely independently operating business units.

Solution
Lufthansa evaluated 25 solutions on the market but only ForceTen was able to support the entire range of requirements from allowing easy access authoring to highly advanced collaborative development of high-end aviation content. Additionally, ForceTen’s outstanding Content Management tools made it the ideal option for managing a single data repository across multiple business units.
Lufthansa deployed a central installation of ForceTen on their intranet server with the option to add additional child instances in order to cater to the specific requirements, branding, and organization structure of the individual business units.

Working closely with the Lufthansa team, Eedo provided a range of templates to accelerate content development. Existing Tutors and Subject Matter Experts were trained by Eedo to become e-learning authors and a center of excellence was established in Lufthansa’s Frankfurt base to manage and control corporate e-learning standards. ForceTen content has proven highly flexible and is delivered through a number of local Learning Management Systems and Learning portals in different parts of the business as well as in offline format on CD-Rom.

Result
After the initial implementation in the central training and personnel development area at Lufthansa, both acceptance and take up of the system have been very positive. The highly critical area of Health and Safety instruction was given initial focus. Here the results have been excellent. With the aid of elearning, the duration of instructor-led courses is being reduced, travel costs are reduced, and consistency of messaging has been enhanced. This success allows Lufthansa to next focus on training for call center staff worldwide.

"This allows us to capitalize on our existing training personnel to maintain high levels of quality and availability of training even with reduced budgets" says Udo Sonne, head of the Lufthansa School of Business and responsible for innovative projects in the Corporate Training arena.

ForceTen is now being extended to form the basis of new third party e-learning content development. The results in increased transparency of processes, reusability of content and maintainability are already beginning to show
